Job Description

Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems is seeking a compassionate, mission-driven Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to join our growing behavioral health team in Bristol, Virginia. This is an opportunity to practice meaningful, patient-centered care while helping expand access to high-quality mental health services in underserved rural communities.

At SVCHS, you will work in a collaborative, integrated care environment where behavioral health is viewed as an essential part of whole-person healthcare. Our providers are empowered to build strong patient relationships, influence care delivery, and make a lasting impact on community health outcomes.

If you are looking for a role where your work truly matters — while also offering strong work-life balance, professional autonomy, and excellent benefits — we would love to connect with you.

Position Summary

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, medication management, and follow-up care for patients across the lifespan. The PMHNP collaborates closely with primary care providers, therapists, case managers, and interdisciplinary care teams to support integrated behavioral healthcare delivery.

This role may serve patients in outpatient clinic settings, integrated primary care environments, substance use recovery programs, and/or telehealth platforms depending on organizational needs and provider interests.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct psychiatric assessments, evaluations, and diagnostic interviews
  • Develop individualized treatment plans for patients with mental health and substance use disorders
  • Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications in accordance with state and federal regulations
  • Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans as appropriate
  • Collaborate with therapists, primary care providers, nursing staff, and care coordinators
  • Provide crisis intervention and stabilization support when needed
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in the electronic health record
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and integrated care planning
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, and wellness strategies
  • Support trauma-informed, culturally competent, patient-centered care delivery

Qualifications

Required

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited program
  • Current Virginia Nurse Practitioner license
  • Board Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
  • DEA registration and prescriptive authority eligibility
  • Current BLS certification
  • Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and commitment to patient-centered care

Preferred

  • Experience in community health, FQHC, integrated care, or outpatient psychiatry
  • Experience treating substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions
  • Experience with underserved or rural populations
