Position Summary
We are seeking a qualified and dedicated High School Humanities Teacher to join our faculty. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering an integrated curriculum that encompasses literature, history, philosophy, and the arts, with the aim of developing students' critical thinking, analytical writing, and oral communication skills. The teacher will guide students in examining primary and secondary sources, constructing evidence-based arguments, and engaging thoughtfully with diverse cultural and historical perspectives. The overarching objective is to cultivate informed, reflective, and responsible individuals prepared for higher education and civic life.

Core Responsibilities
1. Curriculum Development and Instruction

Plan, prepare, and deliver lessons that are rigorous, coherent, and aligned with applicable state or national standards as well as the school’s educational mission.

Integrate interdisciplinary connections among historical events, literary traditions, political thought, and cultural production.

Facilitate active student participation through discussion-based pedagogies, including Socratic Seminars, and incorporate project-based learning approaches.

Employ a wide range of instructional materials, including historical documents, literary texts, essays, film, and visual art.

Differentiate instruction to accommodate the learning needs of a diverse student population, including English Language Learners and students with varied learning profiles.

2. Assessment and Evaluation

Design and administer formative and summative assessments to monitor and measure student learning outcomes.

Evaluate student work—including analytical essays, research papers, oral presentations, and other assignments—and provide timely, constructive feedback.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student performance, attendance, and classroom conduct.

Use assessment data to inform instructional planning and to support continuous improvement in student achievement.

3. Classroom Environment

Establish and maintain a classroom atmosphere that is safe, inclusive, and conducive to intellectual inquiry and respectful dialogue.

Communicate and enforce clear expectations regarding student behaviour and academic integrity.

Manage discussions of sensitive or controversial historical and social topics with professional judgment, objectivity, and cultural sensitivity.

4. Student Support and Mentorship

Serve as an academic advisor to an assigned group of students, providing guidance on academic progress and personal development.

Maintain regular communication with parents and guardians regarding student performance, progress, and areas for improvement.

Identify students requiring additional academic or emotional support and, where appropriate, refer them to relevant support services.

5. Professional Development and Collaboration

Collaborate with colleagues within the Humanities department and across other subject areas, including Science and the Arts, on interdisciplinary initiatives.

Participate actively in department meetings, faculty meetings, and school-wide events.

Engage in ongoing professional learning to remain current with pedagogical approaches, educational technology, and developments in relevant academic disciplines.

Qualifications and Requirements
Education

Bachelor’s degree in History, English, Literature, Political Science, Social Studies, or a related Humanities field.

Experience

A minimum of three years of successful full-time teaching experience at the high school level.
